Cowboy camping along the LA Aqueduct (mile 527.9), then cowboy camping in Tylerhorse Canyon (mile 541.6). Walked 13.7 miles today.
We stopped hiking about 12:30 am and made camp for the night on a couple of concrete slabs.
Woke up about 6 and rested for a bit before Katie, Jedi, Old Dubs, and Mud Dog passed by. They had set out about 3:30am. We packed up and were on our way a bit later. We walked and chatted about Capitalism, Communism, and Socialism.
Got to the water cache after 6 relatively flat miles and squeezed into the shade with the crew who had passed us earlier. Flying and Snowflake pushed on ahead.
Hung out at the cache for a couple hours and ate a bit, then pushed on through a wind farm and the beginning of the climb back up into the mountains.
Katie and I walked together and shared stories, then Jedi caught up to us and we all chatted as we walked.
Rested at a flat spot, then had a big climb to end the day.
Saw Snowflake and Flying climbing out of Tylerhorse canyon as I was climbing down. Yelled back and forth across the canyon briefly before they hiked on. They're going into Tehachapi tomorrow but I've fallen back to hike with the other crew because I want to zero in the city and they want to only do a nearo. My feet are taking a beating from the pace and I feel like I need another rest day. I also reminded myself that I'm not 22 anymore and I shouldn't try to keep up with someone who is. The crew I'm with now are all much closer to my age. Got to camp to find several great looking sites, but upon further inspection, almost all of them were infested with ants. Found enough ant-free space for us to all set up for cowboy (or cowgirl as I was recently corrected) camp.
We ate dinner and then were all in our bags by 7 pm where we chatted a bit. Mud Dog and I discussed whether the Stephen Fry or Jim Dale version of the Harry Potter audiobooks were better. Conclusion was that they're different and one isn't necessarily better. Fell asleep as the moon began to rise over the canyon.
I love the variety of trail names and am curious about how/why they got them. Traveling with a Jedi seems especially safe!
ReplyDeleteE I concur!
DeleteOnly story I know is Old Dubs. She's old school - paper maps, writes in a journal, etc, and the Dubs (or "W") part is for Willie Nelson because she likes to listen to him.
DeleteHey Michael, it’s Sage, glad to see you’re holding up on the trail! Kraut sent me the link to the blog this morning and I couldn’t stop myself from reading lol. Keep it up.
ReplyDeleteHey Sage. Thanks for reading and following along. Hope you're doing well!
DeleteI also love these trail names. I haven't listened to enough of the Stephen Fry version to give an opinion, but I think you guys settled on a proper conclusion.
