Tenting at a meadow (mile 804.1). Walked 14.1 miles today.
Slept well last night and woke up about 5 am. Took my time getting up and we left camp shortly before 7 am. Made the slow trek up Glenn Pass with AB in the lead. We all hiked with her because she has some PTSD from the last time she climbed this pass (which was in a major snow year).
We climbed up slowly and eventually made it to the top. We've started a tradition of playing a song and dancing at each pass. For this one, we played Cotton Eyed Joe off the playlist that my fellow YCC camp counselors made for me (shout-out to Bonnie for organizing it!).
Anyway, AB and I danced (there is a video of it) and then we went down the back (north) side of the pass and only had to deal with a couple small patches of snow.
After a brief snowball fight (in which Jedi landed a perfect headshot on me), we headed down the trail to Rae Lakes.
We went for a swim and the walked on. We're feeling slow today and it's taking us a while to do miles.
Stopped for lunch and then hiked down to a suspension bridge which was very wobbly as we crossed it.
Frank's arm is now in a sling as she hurt her wrist and elbow when she fell at a stream crossing. Right after the stream, we crossed the 800 mile marker.
We began the long climb up to Pinchot Pass which we're aiming to cross this afternoon.
As we climbed slowly, we crossed a river. Both Thin Mint and I got our feet wet when a rock shifted as we rock hopped across. I went out into the stream to fix the rock which worked as it didn't shift for any of the others that later came across. Kept slowly climbing and passed some nice waterfalls. After more climbing, I reached a stream about 3 miles from the top of the pass to find Bougie, Heather, and Arugula. They were planning to stop here for the night. When the others showed up, I proposed we do the same, especially with how everyone was feeling.
We all set up our tents and cooked quickly to avoid the mosquitoes. I eventually had to retreat to my tent as they were so bad and most people weren't too far behind.
Rugged terrain and beautiful lakes! Hope Frank’s atm is better. I liked the 800-mile marker made of pine cones.
ReplyDeleteThe lakes and mountains are just unreal looking. I also love the "800" made out of pine cones instead of rocks. Guess you'll be doing a lot of dancing with all the passes! Hope Frank's arm heals quickly.
ReplyDeleteYay for music & dancing! What a great way to celebrate the climb, and take a pause to soak in the view! 800 miles!! Beautiful pictures! The lake reflection photo is amazing! Enjoy the tunes and the trail!
ReplyDeleteCotton Eyed Joe is a classic at Yankee Stadium (sorry....) Dance on BN! Fixing that rock for others following was something your dad would do too xo
