Woke up at 5:20 and took my time getting ready. We don't need to do huge miles to get to town by the end of the week. We rolled out of camp at 8 am sharp and continued yesterday's downhill for a few miles.
We then hit a very steep uphill where the heat and humidity started to get to us.
At our first water source of the day, I stuck my head under a small waterfall in order to cook off. A few minutes later, I discovered that my sunscreen had exploded in my hip belt pocket. I cleaned it up as best I could and am now guaranteed to not burn today.
We hiked on and after a few more miles if hiking through wildflower meadows, got to a nice campsite where we took a break.
From here, we set a meeting place for lunch and I took off up a long climb.
After the climb, we had some gently rolling hills and great mountain views.
We had lunch by a small stream and Frank asked me if I had noticed the clouds. I hadn't but they were getting a little dark and we had some rumbles of thunder as we left our lunch spot. After a few more miles, the clouds were darker and the lightening and thunder were more frequent.
I wanted to continue on, but Frank (probably wisely) convinced me to take shelter with her under some trees at a campsite and wait for the slow-moving storms to pass. After an hour or so in which we only got a few drops of rain (and Frank got a nap in) we hiked on, both feeling a little tired.
After another climb, we got to a campsite and made dinner. After dinner, we decided not to hike over the next pass but to save it for tomorrow as we're both really tired.
Probably good decisions made all around today I'm loving these wildflowers and rolling green hills. I was actually wondering recently if you were carrying sunscreen - assumed you had to be, but I wasn't sure.
ReplyDeleteBeen carrying it since the beginning, but whether or not I use it is another thing...
DeleteThunderstorms are a bit alarming when you’re exposed. Glad it passed without incident.
ReplyDeleteHow come you carry sunscreen but not bug screen? I think I prefer burn to bite.
