Day 56 - Tuesday, June 22

Tenting at Island Pass (mile 924.7).  Walked 13.7 miles today.

Woke up about 5 am, but we really lollygagged around camp this morning and didn't make it out until 10am partially because Frank wasn't feeling her best.  We made decent progress and gradually climbed up the side of a mountain.  Got to a meadow and parking area which was strange to find.
Despite being a Tuesday, the lot was packed.  Continued up and ran into a ranger.  She didn't check out permits, but we got the "leave no trace" lecture.
Walked on and Frank went head of me for a bit, but I met up with her at a very nice overlook.
We ate lunch here and as a result of the cell service, she did some research on sleeping bags.  We're both thinking of switching out our bags once we leave the Sierra, but we'll see what happens.  Shortly after we left, we ran into Bougie and Clockwork.  They hiked ahead of us, but we passed them when they stopped at the next water source.  Walked along the side of a ridge for a while.  Somewhere in here, Frank's knee started hurting for no apparent reason but she pushed through the pain as we ascended.
Bougie and Clockwork caught up to us and we hiked with them up to Thousand Island Lake where they're spending the night.
We heard that a lot of people are shooting for the site we had planned on; however the ranger we met earlier said there was camping on Island Pass.  It was 1.4 miles before our goal, but we decided we had a better shot at a site there.  Hung out by the lake for a bit before taking off.  Ran into another ranger on the climb out and after hearing we had met his colleague this morning, he just gave us some camping spot tips and we were on our way.
Walked 1.7 easy miles up to the pass and I told Frank stories to distract her from the pain in her knee.  This pass is nothing like any of the others we've done the past week.  You wouldn't know it's a pass at all if you didn't see it in the guide and we were going down the other side before realizing we must have reached the pass.  Set up camp and ate dinner before turning in early because we're both really tired, although we do have a nice view from our campsite.

  1. Looking for cooler sleeping bags once you leave the Sierras? You all are great at choosing lunch and camping spots!

    1. I thought about having my other bag sent but it would save like 2 oz so I won't do it.

  2. Love the picture of the distant mountain lake. What kind of stories do you tell to pass the time?

  3. Caught up! All y’all’s trail names are hilarious. You make the trail sound pretty easy but then you post your shower discussions and the ankle dirt picture and I change my mind. 😂

    1. The dirt is real out here. I just came off a 12-day stretch without a shower and I now can't get over how clean my hair feels compared to how it was.
